If baseball is your thing, then it’s important that you always strive to be a better player. This not only takes you further with the game, enabling you to have more fun, but it also helps the team effort. So, get prepared to do your part and learn more about baseball.
Always wear protective equipment when playing baseball. Just like any sport, injuries happen in baseball. Especially when batting, you need to protect your head. That means you need to wear a helmet whenever you enter the batter’s box. One poor pitch can mean a fastball hitting you in the noggin. That’s at minimum a ringing headache with the potential for a concussion or worse. Be safe.
If you’re into stealing bases, practice taking leads off of bases. Taking leads means you need to know not only your own speed, but also the speed of the pitcher’s pick off move, the speed of his delivery to the plate, and the speed and accuracy of the catcher’s arm. There’s a lot to consider that’ll affect how much lead you take.
When coaching baseball, there are a few things you will need to have close at hand. Be certain you keep a good first aid kit, properly stocked and at the ready. Bring along plenty of water and electrolyte drinks to help players avoid dehydration. Have your practice plan ready for each day with detailed drills and broken into manageable time segments. Naturally, you must be certain of having all the right equipment.
When batting, don’t be afraid to take a few pitches, especially against a pitcher you are less familiar with. Those pitches will give you an idea of the pitchers speed and the ball’s action to the plate. Plus, the additional pitches will help wear out the pitcher over the course of the game. A tired pitcher makes more mistakes.
As soon as contact is made with the ball, it is important that the hitter takes off running towards first base. This will help ensure that the hitter does not get called out. If the ball is a foul ball, the hitter will be called back to the plate to hit again.
If you are a first base coach, you have certain responsibilities. Basically, you must encourage the batter to hustle down the first baseline on all infield hits. You also have to remind the runners as to how many outs there are. You must instruct the runner when it is time ti take an extra base, round first base or hold up. You also have to tell runners how far they should go on pop flies.
Pay attention to the signs the base coaches give you. They can see the entire field. Watch them as you round the bases, and try to avoid looking at the ball. Let the coaches be your eyes. If they motion for you to stop, you should listen. If they tell you to run, run!
When swinging a bat in baseball, make sure that you follow-through with your swing. Your bat’s momentum, whether or not there is contact, helps you follow through. Without following through, there won’t be much power since the swing may slow down prior to making contact. This is why the follow-through is essential.
To help improve the direction of a bunt, and to avoid it going back to the mound, you should position the bat handle and head of the bat in a way that is directed away from the pitcher. Reverse the bases for left handed batters. The correct angling of the bat will keep the bunt fair, and it won’t go back to the pitcher.
When it is time to bat, you must know how to line up correctly at home base. Your body should be facing home plate. Plant your feet about shoulder width apart and slightly bend your knees. Extend the baseball bat to the plate to ensure that the tip of it lines up with the farthest side of the base.
Watch a right-handed pitchers left foot so you do not get thrown out on first. As soon as he picks it up and swings it behind the rubber, he has to pitch it, or he commits a balk, and you get a free pass to second base.
Avoid a catcher’s interference call by waiting until the ball hits your catcher’s mitt. As a catcher, you want to stay far enough away from the hitter in case he decides to swing while the runner is stealing trying to steal. If you make contact with the bat while trying to throw out the runner, then the batter is awarded first base.
To dry your hand off while pitching on a humid night, use the rosin bag that is on the ground behind the pitcher’s mound. Squeeze it gently a few times to get the dust on your hands. It dries up any moisture, leaving your hand free to grip the ball confidently.
Pitchers need to learn how to throw a variety of pitches. A four seam fastball is held by placing all four fingers across the seam of the baseball. This type of fastball is the fastest because the seams allow players to grip the ball; thus, throwing it the fastest.
Becoming that star baseball player, or at least feeling like one, is within reach. All you have to do is continue to work on your talent and skills by continuing to learn new techniques. Take what you’ve learned out to the field and give it a try so that you can be a better player.
